Thursday, March 24th -- Purim Party -- Chabad Lubavitch - 3500 Galt Ocean Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

The note below is from Rabbi Zach.

I would like to invite all King David Bikers to this event. Megilla reading is at 6:00 pm sharp. (MIXED SEATING) (BRING CAMERAS, CELL PHONES WHATEVER!). Followed by scotch, vodka, whiskey, martinis. dancing music and so on...

PURIM is a holiday of delirious joy, of friendship and brotherhood. It is a time when we rededicate ourselves to ideals of Judaism. It is the first festival marking a miracle that came about after the destruction and exile of the Jewish people, at a time when Jews wondered if they were still bound by the ancient covenant with the Creator.

The hidden miracles of Purim prove that the destiny of Israel always remains valid, even when it appears to be hiding in the shadows of history. It is the holiday when we are pure in our joy and our love of the Creator of all things.

Each person is encouraged to WEAR A COSTUME!, bring a bottle and a smile, and have a Wonderful time. PARENTS AND CHILDREN ARE ALL WELCOME.

This Week's Ride - Sunday, March 27th - "Krazy for Kosher" - Picnic in the Park at John Pennekamp State Park

Imagine this, a picnic in the park. Not just a park, but a park on the water, a park with snorkeling, scuba diving, glass bottom boats. A park with a private pavilion and grills for cooking. Now, add to this a fully catered picnic with completely kosher food and what we've got is a "Krazy for Kosher" picnic in the park at John Pennekamp State Park.

Rabbi Zach took charge of this event and advises that the Kustom Kosher Barbeque will be a fixed price that cost somewhere between $10 and $15 per person. John Pennekamp State Park is located at Mile Marker 102.5 in Key Largo and is just about a two hour ride from Country Club Deli.

Last Week's Event/Ride - Downtown Naples Festival of the Arts

So get this, we had a ride planned for Naples for Sunday, but earlier in the week Marge and Ron Miller came up with the great idea to ride over on Saturday and make an overnighter out of it. Well, off they went to Naples, along with the Sirkin's, Fischtein's, Fosman's, Sklar's, Ashkenas's, Mark Herman and Sherry Pressman. In all, 7 bikes, 12 people.

This worked beautifully because while we had a destination in mind, we did not have a restaurant in mind. We knew we'd need to eat right away when we got to Naples since we skipped the breakfast meeting and rode straight over.

And so, the Saturday group served as a great advance team to figure out the all important food situation. Not only did they have a terrific time when they were there on Saturday, but they scouted out somewhere for us to feed.

I get a phone call from Richard Sirkin on Saturday. "Jeff, okay, here's the deal, right now we have a private room booked at Friday's." "Excellent," I say, but Richard continues.

"Look, at least we have a place to eat, this is our backup plan." A fine job indeed, we will not starve when we get to the other side. We agree that I'll call Richard and Marge Miller on Sunday morning to give them a firm head count for our arrival.

Sunday comes and after picking up all bikers and riders we are 20 bikes, 26 people all set to cross the alley. That meant that when we got to the west coast we'd be 27 bikes/38 people, a pretty hefty group with a pretty hearty appetite.

I call Richard from the parking lot while we're lining up our crew into two separate riding groups, one led by me, the other by Frank Bell. I get Richard. "Great news," says Richard, "we found exactly what we were looking for."

And indeed they did, they found a restaurant on the second floor of a beautiful shopping center overlooking the water, gorgeous homes and magnificent boats located just a couple of minutes from "Tin Can Alley." But securing this location apparently was not an easy task. The restaurant simply did not want to commit the space to us.

Enter Sherry and Rita who became the lead negotiators. "We need this space," our team pleaded. "You cannot have it," they repeated.

And so it went, we insisted, they resisted. We begged, they shrugged, "no can do." Sherry and Rita were like a tag team, first one, and then the other.

One would come out and tell the group the update; the other would walk in and give it another shot. This made the new TV show the "Contender" look like a cake-walk. Finally, bloodied and battered, beaten into submission, the restaurant agreed, or rather, caved in.

They gave up; they were hanging over the second-floor balcony waving a white flag. We were victorious, the KDB crowd in the parking lot cheered, Sherry and Rita were gobbled up by the group, placed on shoulders and paraded around the pastel colored shopping center, much to the chagrin of the pastel-clothed white-haired patrons.

Hip hip, hooray, hip hip hooray….KDB would not starve, we'd eat deservedly where we should, in our own private room, overlooking the water, the homes, the boats. The room itself, beautiful, and importantly, reminds me, and us, of that all important premise I've repeated time and again from the beginning of this club - KDB is not just a biking group.

We are a biking group, but we are also a social club, we are part chamber of commerce and our meetings and our eatings are more like being at your best friends kids' bar mitzvah or another friends daughter's wedding. The schmoozing, the relationships, the vibe, it's all there, we're more than a biking club, we are exactly who we set out to be from day one.

We also celebrated Jerry Sklar's birthday and promptly split one slice of chocolate cake into 36 pieces. Below are the ONLY pics we have from Naples. If anyone has more, please send them to Larry Ashkenas at la@adelphia.net. Click on any image to see a larger view.

May 1st - May 7th -- "Ride to Remember" - Washington, D.C. / Yom Hashoa Ride to National Holocaust Memorial

Right now we have 31 people/21 bikes making this trip, some are leaving Sunday, others are leaving Monday.

Some people are riding up all the way and riding all the way back, others are trailering their bikes up there, some are riding up and trailering their bikes back, some are riding up and taking Amtrak back, and still some are flying up there and renting bikes. Regardless of how you get there, this is going to prove to be an interesting, somber and powerful experience all at once.

As you now all know, we are going to Washington D.C. this May, riding from the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial to the Washington D.C. Holocaust Museum in memoriam of the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust, known throughout the world as Yom Hashoa.

Our 1,100 mile journey will take us through 5 states, but more importantly, it looks at though we will be joined along the way with riders from Detroit, Millwaukee and Atlanta, among others as this event begins to unfold and pick up steam and momentum.

We will have two more planning meetings within the 6 weeks prior to this event. Stay tuned for updates on whose riding, whose trailering and so forth.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE FOR EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!
At this time the single most important thing that each and every one of you can do is the following:
  • Send the "Ride to Remember" National Flyer to every single person you know. Here is the link: http://www.kingdavidbikers.com/pdf/pressReleases/KDB_DC.pdf. Click here to download the file and send it to every buddy you have on your email list.
  • At this point in time you have probably seen the extremely neat and very cool "Ride to Remember" flash banner that is on the home page.
  • If not, go there now and check it out. We created that banner so that it can be used by other people who have websites, Jewish organizations and non-Jewish organizations, with the request being to place this banner on their website. The banner has a link embedded in it that will take people to the KDB site where they can see all the details about the trip.

Saturday, April 16th - First Annual KDB Anniversary Party

IN THE TWO WEEKS SINCE WE HAVE STARTED TO PROMOTE THIS EVENT WE NOW HAVE 48 PEOPLE SIGNED UP FOR THIS EVENT. KEEP'EM ROLLIN' IN FOLKS, THIS IS GOING TO BE A FUN NIGHT!

So, we have quite a challenge ahead of us for the KDB first anniversary party, especially considering the incredible job Linda Levry did for us during the last social event at Opa Taverna. The bar has been set pretty high so all we can do is strive to reach that bar, and in classic KDB fashion do what we can to do better at all things at all times. Life is about stretching, and I don't necessarily mean the elastic band around the pants.

And so, after searching high and low, after scouting the county from north to south, after looking under rocks and peering over cliffs for just the right place, a place that is fun and high energy, a place that gives us the right vibe and environment to meet all of our needs, the perfect place has been found. It is Club Boca. Here is the link: www.clubboca.net.

Now, here's what you need to know. First, if you go to the link above your going to think to yourself, "oh my god, this place is insane." And you know what, you're right. This is by far one of the hippest, hottest clubs in all of South Florida; it has been around for a long, long time and it has changed hands on more than a few occasions. But, regardless of what it was, Club Boca is and continues to be one very cool place.

So, here's what happens for us during our anniversary party night at Club Boca. First of all, we pretty much own the club, to ourselves, from 8:00 PM until 10:00 PM. During that time, here's what goes on.

First of all, we have the ability to cater in our own food and so, we will be catering in excellent Kosher food, it will be a buffet and there will be a ton of it. We know during the past couple of events there have been problems with food, as in not enough, and as in service, as in not good enough. Rabbi Zach has made it his personal mission to ensure that this Kosher catered party is nothing short of sensational.

So, we've got the club, we've got the food, but what about entertainment? Good question, glad you asked! Club Boca has become and remains one of the most happening clubs in the tri-county area for two reasons. First it is very cool inside and secondly, they play unbelievable dance music. So, we have that going for us.

But add to this a special performance by our very own Charles Sheikovitz, a professional choreographer and dancer, who describes himself as a "Jewish Ben Vereen" and we've got our own private 20-minute show at the beginning of our night. So, let's review. Cool club. Excellent food and lots of it.

A personal show of great entertainment by one of our members. Incredible music. Oh, and one more thing. From 10:00 PM until 12:00 PM, we own/control the entire VIP room, which is a second story space with Plexiglas railings that overlooks the dance floor.

Sounds to me like one heckuva good time. So, you want to know how much? Well, we don't have the hard figures in just yet as we are waiting on firming up a menu with the caterer. But, it will be in the $45 per person price range, plus or minus $5, that will include everything, admission to the club, food and so forth, but of course, you're on your own for drinks.

If you are interested in coming please fill in the form below.
I will be there
