Question: I have herd many diferent things about the subject and I wanted to know what are the laws on tattoos in the jewish reigion
Rabbi ZigZag's Answer: Several reasons: First, Tattoing is a pagan ritual. We dc not follow those practices. Two, our bodies belong to Hashem, we are only renting it. The torah teaches us that we should leave it just the way G-D made it for us.
With regard to what to do if you have one, try and have it removed if it's not too painful. Otherwise, please don't get another one.

Question: B"H
Hi Rav Zig Zag,
I am in LA riding with and a member of the Bluestar Cruiser club. Thier website is
Bluestarcruisers.com
No doubt bluestar cruisers is a fine club with fine people. I
would like to ask youre
opinion how I should deal with the club when they choose to go to restaurants that are not kosher. The president of the club used to own - manage one of the most popular kosher pizza
restaurants in town. I believe now he owns the building where the restaurant is; not so much runs the restaurant
lately. However, he doesn't always direct the to club to kosher restaurants to meet.
Often he does, often he
doesn't. We even used to
meet at his Pizza place. On longer rides where the club will stop at some non kosher place, I just stop and go off
somehwere to eat by myself. That has got uninspiring. On the weekly meetings where
they meet in town in some
place I can't go, I usually don't bother showing up.
The club will go for several weeks at very fine local kosher restaurants with
excellent hashkachas and
then go for another place a few times that isn't kosher. Do you have any suggestions? Its been like this since they started since
Yom Atzmeut almost 2
years now. I have had
success in getting a few
riders to put teffilin, bench in the restaurants and do other yiddishkiet. I am alone
at this point with the club and its not getting any easier with the yiddishkiet.
Good Yom tov for the
upcoming Pesach days.

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer: Happy Pesach David,
Keep your head high and keep the faith my holy brother. There are lots of Jews who ride in LA. More than you think. As for kashrus. There are pre made meals you can warm in your bags next to your pipes. Pretty good too. Really, I'm not kidding steak chicken etc.
Kosher Mart makes them. Stay positive. Hashem has very special plans for you. Keep putting on tefillin with other Jews. Show them how to strap on that leather baby. Let them know how cool it is to coneect to the Creator!
Try associating with some folks at the Chabad. They can give you some great support. Just let me know where your at and I'll hook you up.

Question: Rabbi Betes,
I hope to attend the Ride to Remember in May 2005. I am trying to decide whether to stay for Shabbat or to return home. The home trip is a push to make in half a day (250 miles), so I am thinking about staying for Friday and Saturday night. I live in a rural area, and get to a Conservative Shabbat minyan by driving, but I do not drive elsewhere on Shabbat. At home, I have worked out food for Shabbat, but I would like to know what I should do for food if I decide to stay in the hotel you recommend and attend the Orthodox or Chabad service.
If you want to know more about me, just e-mail.
I am also interested in the Shabbat activities that these shuls might have on the day after the Yid motorcycle gang ride.
By the way, I ride a 1973 BMW R75/5 that I have owned for 32 years.
Shalom,
Jan
Rabbi ZigZag's Answer: Happy Pesach Jan,
How you get back and forth to shul is your business brother. The Chabad has no labels. We get EVERYONE from the reformed to orthodox. There are no labels. Every Jew is treated with respect and vice versa.
So stay at the Churchill Hotel in DC. Let them know your with the JMA aand they will give you a special rate and you'll be ten steps from the shul.

Other than the obvious "no riding on Shabbat," is there anything in halacha that pertains to riding motorcycles?

Question: Hi Rabbi
I am in the process of starting a chapter of KDB in Johannesburg South Africa. There has been a lot of interest but many don't want the club name to sound too Jewish and want it open to those 'wishing to be associated with a Jewish club'. I know some of these have married out but still feel a longing to be part of a Jewish organisation. My gut feel is to welcome all with the idea that people will get more involved in their Juadism but obviously the above brings certain problems with it. Please let me have your thought as well as experiences in this regard relative to your involvement at KDB.
Regards Ian
Rabbi ZigZag's Answer: Dear Ian,
Remember, we are Jews first and bikers second. I could go on for days with proofs on how this works. but we've only got 2 inches of air space so. Be proud to be a King David Biker. This means that you are Jewish and you ride a motorcycle. If you want it to be something else then, it is your decision to be something else. Just remember what a King David Biker is. If you are not Jews who ride motorcycles then you are something else. If you wish to go further with this you may contact me directly at rabbizigzag@bellsouth.net.

Submitted By: Carla Greenberg
Question: How do I follow a g-d who chooses to place defenceless people in a dry, barren and infertile land, withhold food and water from them and give to them disease for which they stand no chance of defeating? I speak of those souls in disease ravaged countries, war plagued continents where innocence is served up on the dinner plate every day and slaughtered as though as though it were meant to be that way. I have lost my faith in my g-d and perhaps you cannot help me from so many miles away, but I thought I would say hi anyway, up here in the cold and stormy Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. Shalom.
Rabbi ZigZag's Answer: Dearest Carla,
You have asked a very good question, and a timely one at that.
My first response is if you are blaming G-D for everything that has happened bad in the world today, just as yesterday such as. Adam and Eve, Sodom and Gomorrah, The Flood of Noah, The Jews in Slavery in Egypt, The Chorban (The Babylonian Exile), The Spanish Inquisition, The Destruction of the Beit Hamikdash (The Holy Temple), Hitler and Nazi Germany, 911, The Pogroms, Anti Semitism, Black Slavery, Prejudice, The Arab Israeli Conflict, Starvation, Disease, Pestilence, Germ Warfare, Bio Terrorism, Nuclear Holocaust and we know the list goes on and on..
If so, the OPPOSITE MUST ALSO BE TRUE. AND THEN SO MUST WE ALSO BE COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY THANKFUL TO A CREATOR WHO HAS GIVEN US ALL THE GOOD IN THE WORLD TODAY? WHO HAS GIVEN US "A CHOICE” Because ultimately we know we are given "Free Will". The Ability to choose "THE RIGHT PATH" OR TO CHOOSE “THE WRONG OR EVIL PATH" OR EVEN WORSE, "TO COMPLAIN AND DO NOTHING."
And so I ask you could it be that Hashem wants us to "DO SOMETHING”?
Sure if everything was just "Good" all the time we could wake up in the morning, not have to make any decisions that were meaningful, moving, important, or that made a difference. We could simply go on with our lives thinking only of ourselves and saying "It's all good". Just like a cow in a pasture, or an ant, or any creation in nature that does not have "Free Choice". WE ARE THE ZENITH OF CREATION. What does this mean? And More important what did Hashem mean when he created us and said, "It was good"...
At whatever level of learning you may have about "The Torah". Understand we as Jews do not just understand it in only its literal translation. The true study of Torah tells us SO MUCH MORE. It is not just a history book, IT IS OUR BLUEPRINT FOR LIVING, but even in its literal interpretation we know the teachings of Hashem our Creator are only the teachings of "Goodness and Kindness". Doing Torah and Mitzvahs to glorify Him and strengthen our connection to Him and to each other.
In this week's Torah Portion we read and study from the Book of Shemot or "Exodus" In this Torah Portion" named “Va'eira" which means "I revealed myself” to Moses and to The Jewish People. G-D commands Moses to approach Pharaoh show him G-D's signs and wonders and say "Let my People Go". G-d informs Moses that he will "Harden the heart“of Pharaoh so that these signs and wonders on behalf of the Jewish people will assure the Jews will be freed from the land of Egypt.
And so Moses goes to Pharoah, with signs and with wonders from Hashem and still Pharoah not only says NO, he makes it even harder on them.
Moses approaches Hashem saying "Why have you done this?" I only made it worse. Now we are being treated even worse than before.
But Hashem insists that Moses continue with His plan. That he not "LOSE FAITH" and that he trust in the will of G-D. And so the Nile was turned to Blood, then Frogs, then Vermin and the list goes on. More of these physical signs to make it clear that, The Creator of all Worlds and all Creation is giving the orders and still, Pharoah challenges and not until the final tenth plague does Pharoah finally relent and says. GO! AVITAZEN! SOYONARA! SHALOM!
So what do you think? That it was that easy? That every Jew just said OK let's go. Not so simple. THE SIGNS AND WONDERS WERE ALSO TO TEACH EVERY JEW THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON OF ALL.....
It is important to understand that during our slavery in Egypt we were at an all time low in our faith. Just think, no shuls, no matzoh balls, no kreplach, no knishes, No Bagels. Man I mean we were really at an all time low, while Pharoah is bathing himself in the blood of young Jewish infants.
With every sign, with every wonder, our people began to understand that "They were not alone". Moses took up the staff for the Jewish People and Aaron spoke for him. G-D reveals Himself in a way he did not to Abraham Isaac or Jacob. In such a way that the Jewish Nation begins to "intellectually" understand that no matter how difficult their connection with G-D may be. No matter how far they have fallen into despair, with every sign and with every wonder that is GOOD AND WONDERFUL AND MAKES US SMILE AND MAKES US CRY every Jew must “DO SOMETHING” AND CARE FOR ANOTHER.
WE CAN LET OUR EVIL INCLINATION OR OUR “YETZER HARAH” TELL US THAT G-D IS LETTING BAD THINGS HAPPEN. AND DO NOTHING ………
OR, WE CAN LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS, STAND FAST TO OUR HERITAGE TO OUR CREATOR, TO OUR FAMILIES, TO OUR FAITH. IN THIS WAY WE CAN DO REAL ACTS OF TORAH, Supporting those that do not have, caring for new born children , respecting our Mothers and Fathers, giving to those that have nothing or even less. We can support our synagogues and our Rabbi’s. We can be part of our community and MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THIS IS THE MESSAGE OF OUR CREATOR AND OF OUR TORAH.
This is not only a good thing, it is our responsibility and it is “OUR MISSION”.
So what can we believe in? Being a Giver and Not a Taker is a beginning.
So we learn from this Physical Redemption From SLAVERY TO FREEDOM that through these elements of trial and tribulation we can always overcome them through acts of kindness and concern for others and MOST IMPORTANT THROUGH OUR FAITH IN OUR CREATOR, can we achieve our "Spiritual Redemption".
And so my Dearest Carla, my advice to you is this. Shabbat is just around the corner. Friday night at whatever time the sun sets by you. Call all your friends (especially Biker Friends) and loved ones, invite them over. Make a nice big fire in your fireplace “before Shabbat” Light the Shabbat candles. (If you need to know the blessing just email me and I’ll tell you). Make Kiddush on a big bottle of wine. Have some challah. Eat a nice meal, Have vodka or a scotch or two or three. Put your feet up . Then you can say, “Baruch Hashem” Blessed is G-D. And guess what you’re off to a great start. Cause Sunday is the first day of the rest of your life baby! SO MAKE IT COUNT!
May Hashem Bless you and yours.
